Building in

We are “BUILDING IN” a behavior by “PRIMING” (adding value to)
“LETS GO”
For it be a reliable alternative behavior . Our canines can not be lunging toward a dog or human if they are excitedly moving in the opposite direction & focused on us 👀.
.
STEPS
Grab a pocket full of HIGH VALUE FOOD REWARDS
In a safe area with minimal distractions. Preferably inside house, backyard, or driveway.
We have the dog on leash and make like we are going for a walk
Quickly & suddenly we move in the opposite direction saying “LETS GO” in an excited tone.
Once our dog turns to follow (leash in hand to make sure) we will “PAY” them for turning toward us/following in the new direction.
DO THIS 25-50x a day
After practicing for a while we will introduce distractions at a safe distance.(maybe a week or in some cases months)
This takes a different approach to correcting by “INSTALLING” “ALTERNATIVE BEHAVIORS”.
There is a time & place for correcting
However
If we are working with fearful/anxious canines this can make the situation harder to remedy. If we do need to correct, it will be after establishing a relationship, once we know that they understand what actions we expect.
This changes the correction from “you are lunging” to “you didn't demonstrate this practiced behavior I know you know how to do”.
